Welcome to the Activity Database for the project,
'Supporting non-traditional groups in HE'

Gathered from seven Irish Universities and the DIT and in recognition of the diversity of the student population, the short case-studies contained in this database describe what teaching staff do/have done to enhance the learning experience for all their students.

Development of this database is supported financially by the HEA Strategic Initiatives Fund and is run in partnership between NUI Maynooth, NUI Galway and DIT as part of a project entitled ‘ Supporting non-traditional groups in Higher Education'.
Originally designed to collect activities from all Irish Universities and the DIT, the database has now been extended to include all other Irish HEIs.
The overall aim of the project is to continue to support non-traditional groups in Higher Education with a view to contributing to successful student participation.

 For the purposes of this project, non-traditional learners include:

•
 Socio-economically disadvantaged students (including students who have come into higher education via an access route);
•
 Mature students;
•
 Students with disabilities (learning and/or physical);
•
 Part-time students;
•
 Minority-ethnic students (members of disadvantaged minority communities, including Travelers, Refugees, Asylum Seekers from Africa and Asia, for example);
•
 International students (non-disadvantaged, including, for example, Erasmus students, American visiting students, students from South East Asia – those who come to Ireland specifically to study and pay full fees);
•
 Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans-sexual students.

Dr. Ann Coughlan, Project Officer based in NUI Maynooth, was responsible for collecting and uploading the original set of activities up to the official launch of the database by Michael Kelly, HEA chairman at the Challenge of Diversity conference on 9 June 2006 see http://www.conference.ie/
